Mount Bibele, one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy, is composed of a sandstone massif that divides the valleys of the Idice and Zena streams. Its name comes from the Latin word “bibo,” meaning “to drink.” Many people have inhabited the area since prehistoric times, including Etruscans and Celts. The archaeological area of the village of Pianella di Monte Savino represents an example of urban planning by Celtic peoples, developed on a settlement of Etruscan origin. To this day the walls of the houses, street areas and a large public cistern are still visible.
